Chip shop knitwear?
Chip shop babies, as they have become known, are those who are so poor that when they are born they are wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm. News of these babies reached Women's Guilds around the UK and soon a flood of knitted vests/jumpers and hats became available to them. Mission International is now seeing babies in a number of developing world countries being provided with some colourful hand knitted clothes. This picture shows babies at the Cyangugu medical centre feeding station in Rwanda run by the Anglican Church receiving their clothes.

BIG meal 2012 a great success!
We planned to feed hungry children in 10 countries this year, in fact the BIG meal reached 11 countries on Christmas 2012. Malawi was added for the first time and even though the DR Congo BIG meal could not take place in DR Congo due to the war, Pastor Jean Paul Munganga was able to feed 500 needy kids in the refugee camp, where he and his family are in exile on Christmas Day. To see some of the photos of events on Christmas Day around the world please visit our BIG meal 2012 web page! To support the BIG meal 2013 for next Christmas please click here.

Mighty Meals: You may like to consider feeding a needy child every day of the year! For around £2.00 a month (£25/year) Mission International's Mighty Meals does just that. To donate to Mighty Meals please click here.

DR Congo kids treated to Nativity play:
War in DR Congo meant that our partners, based in Goma, had to flee the country to live for the time being in a refugee camp near Mbarara in Uganda. We initially thought that there would be no DR Congo BIG meal in 2012 as planned, however we were able to transfer funds which were picked up in Uganda and 500 kids (200 invited 500 turned up) were all given a BIG meal on Christmas day as well as being treated to a very realistic nativity play. Christmas Message 2012
Nursery raises funds for BIG meal 2012:
Angus College nursery children raised £92 for the BIG meal after hearing how many poor children don't get any presents or Christmas dinner on Christmas Day!

Funds raised for medical facility:

Recent fundraising carried out by a church congregation in England after Mission International friends Ian & Jude Mayer highlighted the plight of the needy community, means that Mission International can now provide health care and support for refugee returnees in the
Gatumba area of Burundi. £10,000 added to funds already raised will make it possible for us to construct a further house (house 6 on the plan, which will revert to being a house once the medical centre is complete) which will become a temporary medical centre until the funds are raised to build a permanent medical centre on the Hope Centre land in Gatumba. When the Hope Centre was in the planning stages we asked the local community, mainly consisting of refugee returnees, what we could do which would best help them. their answer was for us to provide a skills centre and a medical centre. Both of these projects are still on our agenda, however we feel that it is important to provide a simple medical facility as a dispensary and consulting rooms in order that the many needy folks in the area can have at least a basic provision until a more complete provision can be put in place. Burundi currently has 11 dentists for 9 million people and the doctor patient ratio is 1:300,000 or thereby. Mission International's Mission Medics teams will also be involved in this facility and in the centre when it is completed.

No respecter of persons!
Christian pastors are currently languishing with their congregations in Refugee camps in Congo. This picture just in today (7/11/2012) is one of many showing the dire circumstances in which many are experiencing right now in Congo. I make no comment on the rights and wrongs of the unrest but only pray that these dear people, believers or otherwise, are protected and looked after as they await a peaceful return to their homes.

Mary Weeks-Millard's book goes for a reprint!
(Click on image to go to Amazon)
Mary Weeks-Millard (pictured on the left on the book cover image) is a Mission International missioner mainly in Rwanda. Mary has written a number of books however her "After the Genocide there is hope" is now going for reprint. This is a worthwhile story of Rev Etienne (Steven - pictured middle) who still ministers in the area (Mbyo, Nyamata) where the troubles once overtook him and his family. A worthwhile read and would make a superb Christmas present!
Intrinsic Skills training:
Truck arrives in Burundi!
We are happy to announce that the truck sent out from the UK about a month ago has arrived in th Burundi Port Authority. What happens now? Well the port authority will agree with Rema Ministries what the import taxes will be on the truck and its contents; the truck will be registered and insured and hopefully released into the hands of Rema Ministries in the very near future. Our prayer is that the Govt do not apply a very heavy tax and also that they release the truck quickly, allowing it to be 'Opened' at Rema's premiss to avoid any corrupt removal of items from the truck.
Donation from LRGS!

Global Hunger Index:
Two countries where Mission International is currently working (Burundi & Haiti) score highest on the Global Hunger Index (GHI). It is crucial that we continue our work in these and other poor developing world countries; developing suitable projects and finding initiatives that will help change these statistics. To donate to Mission International's work please donate via Give.net.

Mission International is now registered with give.net
Give.net is operated by Stewardship the long established charity finance management organisation.   Now you can set up a sponsorship page (much in the same way as you might via JustGiving with whom we are also registered) and begin fundraising for Mission International.  This added option to Mission International's giving choices makes it easy for individuals and groups to raise much needed funds for our projects in the developing world.   Or you can give a donation to Mission International here.

4 Wheel Drive (4X4) Vehicles Wanted!
Now that large 4X4 vehicles are becoming a bit pricey to run you may find that you want to move on to a vehicle with a lower fuel consumption or carbon footprint.   Mission International can use 4X4 vehicles in our projects in Africa for various reasons, including transporting teams and staff into rural, remote, difficult to access regions.  We would also like to have a 4X4 for our Mission Teams work here in the UK.   If you, or someone you know has a roadworthy 4X4 and would like to donate it to our work here and abroad, we would love to hear from you.   Please contact us.

New Preaching Teaching Training page!
(Click on image below to visit this page)
If you are interested in taking part in a team designed to bring God's Word to pastors, church leaders and congregations in the developing world then we would love to hear from you.  Many pastors have had little or no training and some are leading large churches and don't have access to Bibles and other materials in their language.   You may be an experienced preacher/teacher/trainer and wish to share your experience with others.   You may be just beginning on this road and would like to be paired with other more experienced volunteers as you learn.   If so please 'Contact' us to discuss this further.

Fix-A-Fix is a non-ring-fenced fund which allows Mission International to provide support for projects which are emergencies or do not fall into any particular category.   It may be that someone's home has been broken or damaged by storms, flooding or fire, or that a crisis has taken place for a family or an individual.  Giving to fix-a-fix allows us to quickly deal with emergencies which occur in communities where insurance cover is not available.

Please consider supporting the Fix-A-Fix fund and in so doing bring help in time of trouble.

Truck bound for Burundi is loaded!
Saturday 18.8.2012 - A small team of volunteers loaded the 'Container Relief' truck our current project bound for Burundi from the storage depot near Rosewell outside Edinburgh.   The truck will carry a variety of goods required by Mission International projects in Burundi.   Mission International already has plans drawn up to build a skills centre in Gatumba which will provide training for some of the many refugee returnees now back in Burundi after many years of exile and so the truck is carrying a wide range of hand and electrical tools which will be used in this crucial training initiative.   Also a very generous donation of 500 pairs of shoes made by Ward Walkers, a Dundee footwear company, will be send to provide for needy families in the area.
The truck was donated by (Graham Rennie) 3663 the well known UK food distribution company and the cost of shipping will be covered by Kevin Dixon Commercials.   We are very grateful to these two transport companies for their generosity and help in this project and in raising almost £3000 at a recent Bar-B-Q near Galashiels.   There were many other donors (you know who you are) too numerous to mention who have generously given to this work, however there are some who should be mentioned.   One selfless lady called Paula Godfrey provided a large number of 'Lucky bags' for children in poor families,   She collected and boxed them up and delivered them to the truck ready to go, a large number of kids will be excited to open their gifts around Christmas time this year we hope.   A further notable donor is a group called "Tools for Self Reliance" who have provided us with a large consignment of recycled and refurbished tools which will be used in the skills centre.  And finally Dundee University School of Nursing & Midwifery donated 12 PCs c/w monitors, keyboards and mice etc.
It is hoped that the truck will be shipped via Hull to Dar es Salaam in the next few weeks and will arrives a few months later in Burundi where it will be used to transport fresh & frozen food to needy communities around the country.

Haiti Mission Team presents Bibles!
Mission International's Haiti team 2012 were able to provide Bibles in Creole for the Trinity Church members whom they served with in Haiti during July this year.   Many believers in churches where members are poor do not have the funds to purchase what is an essential item for study and worship.   We are grateful, as the Haitian believers are, to those who made it possible for them to have their own Bible.

Bibles for DR Congo:
Bibles purchased after a donation from Mission International's literature fund have been distributed to refugees in DR Congo.   These precious people have been uprooted from their homes due to war in the east of DR Congo next to the Rwanda border and are now homeless.   They have however been blessed by the gift of a Bible and are happy that they can now read God's word for themselves.   Thank you to all of those who make these donations possible.   If you would like to support this project please visit our 'Make a Donation' page.

"A city set on a hill cannot be hid" - Matthew 5:14
This scripture refers to the church and Jesus is telling his church that they are to be obvious like a shining light in a dark world.   Even today we are experiencing some tremendous darkness and even today Jesus' call to be 'the light of the world' remains a central priority for the church.   The image below shows a city, not what we might have in mind though.   This is a city of refugees in Rwanda fleeing the problems in DR Congo, this 'city', a refugee camp is the overspill from another camp further north in Rwanda which has become too full and further land was needed to provide a place for these fleeing families to find refuge.   I drove past this new camp in Kigeme as I returned from Cyangugu in the south to Kigali, Rwanda's capital city via the Nyungwe Forest road on Monday of this week.   Frankly I was astounded at the numbers of families which have now been displaced and had to stop to take some photos from the distance.   These dwellings, seen in the image below, are made like simple tents with no flooring and no amenities.   The church across Rwanda has been called upon to help by providing whatever they can, however Rwanda remains a poor and very densely populated country and thus has little to spare.   Rwandans of course remember when they themselves were refugees in DR Congo and Tanzania and I am sure wish to help their neighbours in whatever way they can.

Mission International partner in DR Congo (Pastor John Paul Munganga) tells me that 230 families have arrived in his church alone in Goma (DR Congo side of Rwandan border) as they flee the fighting.   He asks if there is any help that we can give to help his church respond to such an influx of refugees and the many orphans associated with the fighting.   Currently Mission International does not have funds to send to him, however if you are able to help we can forward funds which will help purchase simple shelters and basic supplies for these dear people.   To find out how to support Mission International projects please visit our "Make a Donation" page.

Teams news:
The Haiti team and the Burundi/Rwanda team are now home.   Their service to those in need cannot really be easily measured since the spiritual significance of their time spent with those in need is unable to be measured in human terms. A blog for our teams can be see here  http://www.missioninternationalblog.blogspot.co.uk/

Our Ghana team are already preparing to go, they begin their deployment 10th August 2012.   They will travel to the capital Accra and from their to Zuarungu near Bolgatanga in the north east sector of the country.   They will serve amongst the Frafra people involving themselves in construction work as well as encouraging the church and the community there.

Recruiting teams for 2013: We hope to deploy a number of teams next summer in various places.   Their deployments will depend on numbers and so we are now recruiting for 2013 teams to the following destinations:

Special honour for Mission International director:
In the Queen's Jubilee year the birthday honours list included the name of Mission International founder and
director, Hugh Henderson who received an MBE for voluntary service to the international community.  Hugh and his family and all those involved in Mission International are delighted and wish to say "thank you" to everyone for the many messages of congratulation which have arrived from around the world.   Hugh says "This unexpected but very welcome award is well received, however the many supporters in the UK and our partners in the developing world are the ones who have made the successful work of Mission International possible".

Cluster Dynamics
Cluster Dynamics is a new initiative designed to bring funding to 'Cluster' groups in the developing world.   A cluster group is a small co-operative of families who have come together to pool their resources in terms of skills, energy and finance to develop projects which will provide support for them and their families.

Single Parent families:
Many of our cluster groups are single parent families (usually mothers with children) and due to their very difficult economic situation they find it difficult to provide even the basics for their children.   The cluster groups will provide a collective approach to their situation which allows a new dynamic to be at work bringing new hope and new opportunities.

Project options:
A wide range of projects are possible, however a number of common examples are as follows:  Chicken production, donkey water transport, wheat farming, bee keeping and furniture making.

Small Grants:
Mission International, with your help and support, will provide small start-up grants of £500, £1000 and £1500 to get these new sustainable projects under way.

Making a Donation:
Please visit our Make a Donation page where you will find a number of ways you can give.

Helping the poor - Carson, Keller & Piper!
Truck livery in place:
This truck which has been donated to Mission International and is bound for Burundi later this year. It has now had its unique livery put in place and is ready to be filled with resources.
The vehicle will be sent to Burundi to carry resources for Mission International projects there, like tools and computers for our proposed skills centre in Gatumba.  Once there it will serve as refrigerated transport for fish from lake Tanganyika to the hinterland of Burundi and from there beef, fruit and vegetables will be transported back to the city.   This will help both communities a great deal.   Poor rural communities which lie far from the lake have little opportunity to buy fish to vary and improve their diet at affordable prices and beef is difficult to carry into the city maintaining its freshness.

This partnership between Mission International and Rema Ministries will benefit many of the 900,000 refugee returnee families who are currently coming back to Burundi from exile in neighbouring countries.   The Burundi government is struggling to try to cope with the huge influx of their people retuning in such a short period of time.   Mission International is partnering with Rema Ministries to do what ever we can to help these returnees as they try to start their lives over again in their home country, although some of them have never lived their before, having been refugees for many, many years.
We are grateful to those who have donated time and resources, like paint etc, to see the truck looking so well in advance of the trip.

Laptop helps Kabera student!
A business studies degree student living with his wife and child in Kabera slum in Nairobi Kenya is now the proud owner of a laptop donated by one of Mission International's supporters.   Aloice Okuku is delighted with his new acquisition and feels very excited about the support that he has received to study at university level.
Aloice is keen to develop his education and skills so that he can adequately support his family and become a valued member of the workforce in his beloved Kenya.  He wants to pass on his thanks to those who are supporting him and to those who have made the laptop available.

Kandaria (St Andrews) Irrigation project:
(click on image to open album of related photos)
Kandaria village lies on the shores of Lake Victoria near Kisumu in Kenya.  The project (see irrigation appeal below) is designed to provide a regular source of water for a remote village which relies on agricultural projects to raise the funds to send their children to school.   One major donor was Menzieshill High School in Dundee who carried out sponsored events to raise the funds required to purchase a water pump and pipework to get this crucial project under way.
The image shows the villagers testing the pump, and it can be easily seen that it can pump a high volume of water, which is exactly what is needed to flood rice fields and irrigate fields of crops.

Hope Centre Development:
Mission International is now raising funds in order to further develop the Hope Centre complex in Burundi.   There are three major new phases planned which will be developed on land already purchased and adjacent to the Homes already built for the Hope centre children.   To see the history of what has already been accomplished since 2006 please visit www.HopeCentreBurundi.com where you will find lots of detail.   To find out about the three new phases on the drawing board [please click on the 'Hope Centre Development' image here and you will open a detailed view of what is planned.

Mission Teams 2013:
Change a life through sponsorship!
Many children in the developing world are barely surviving and in abject poverty.   Child sponsorship is a wonderful way to help a child and their family to see hope for the future.   Mission International's Global Sponsor programme caters for children of all ages and abilities, allowing them to get through primary and secondary school, giving them the skills and education to help them go out into the world of work, and for some receive support to go to college or university.

If you would like to sponsor a child please visit our child sponsorship web page where you can find out more information and begin the process of sponsoring a child.   if you are now at the stage where you want to go ahead and sponsor a child please go to our make a donation page and there complete the standing order (|Regular monthly giving) form which is located as an attachment at the foot of the page.

To fully sponsor a child with Mission International required a regular monthly donation of £20/month  (£240/year)   You can part sponsor from £5/month (£60/year).   There are some children, due to their circumstances require up to £30/month (£360/year).

Irrigation Appeal!
Please consider supporting this appeal to find irrigation equipment funding for a project in Kenya!
The 'St Andrews Project' (an indigenous project and a partner of Mission International in Kenya) is in need of help to raise funding to provide some infrastructure for their rice and vegetable growing project in the village of Kandaria near Kisumu.

There are a total of 18 households who will benefit from this project (almost 200 people).   A remote community currently living in very poor circumstances, they are doing everything they can locally and they will of course share al of the labour in terms of cultivation, sowing and planting, weeding and crop protection.   The project will provide a water pump and irrigation pipes to transport water from Lake Victoria to their fields nearby.  There is a portion of the funding to provide fuel and maintenance for the pump, seeds and tools to make sure the crops are well looked after until the time of harvest.

The result will be a major change in this small community.   In recent days they have built their own school and so want to be able to afford to hire teachers and send their children to the school.   The project will allow them develop their circumstances

Currently we have raised £1000 of the £8500 required to fully fund this project.   If you are able to help by making a donation, large or small, to this project we, and they would be very grateful.
